Yes, TMG uses pointers to your sources. All references to the sources are
updated when you renumber. One caution though: be sure you have the most
up to date patches. (version 4.0 D). See

instructions on how to patch. (about half way down the page it talks about
the free downloaded patches)
A good safe way to update TMG (or any software for that matter) is to backup
your database. Apply the patches, do your renumbering. Then check out some
of the references to the sources.If you have any problems with the database,
stop and call wholly genes support immediately. Do not do anything else to
your database. They will likely be able to recover the database if anything
goes wrong. Or you can revert to your backup.
The reason I suggest the above is that there was some problem in one version
with renumbering and/or optimizing the database after renumbering.
