I teach classes here in Southern Maine on Genealogy on the Internet. Last
night my class was finally able to get onto the Ellis Island website and had
a lot of luck (and fun) accessing records.
A couple of question arose that I am wondering if anyone has an answer to.
I do realize there are lots of mistakes and discrepencies to be dealt with
in this site.
In one instance someone found her grandfather coming in 1912 from Italy.
The Ethnicity is listed as Italy - South. However, it correctly has him
coming from Carrara and departing from Genoa....both of those places are in
Northern Italy.
Also, when reviewing the original ship's manifest it says he had been in US
before in 1901 which makes sense as this woman's mother was born in the US
in 1908). However, no records show for any individual of that name (there
were only four exact matches) for any date earlier than 1911. Would he have
come through a different port earlier or do you suppose it's a case of the
person doing the data entry misreading the spelling of the name at the
earlier entry?
Any input?
Thanks,
Pam Eagleson
