Well, after my last posting I had several requests for the "Library
database" that I wrote many years ago in MS-Access, which I have been
pleased to honor. That prompts me to ask this list... What uses have
you found for MS-Access databases to assist with your genealogical
research?

While asking, let me provide my own answer. I have found that I
actually use three applications that I have written in Access. In order
of frequency of use, they are:

(1) Correspondence Log. I use this constantly. I record every letter
I have ever written (and since 1977 I have written 1,883 letters to
further my family research). The query facility in Access allows me to
answer questions like, "I wonder whom I have corresponded with about the
LOWE surname?" Or, "I know I wrote to somebody in Richmond, NY. Who
was that?" [Before you ask... Alas, I write just too many emails to
record each one. If anyone has a good solution to the email glut, I'd
love to hear about it.]

(2) Census Research. Records all "candidates" to appear in a census
and the results (yes, no, maybe) of each year/state search. Prints
reports by Surname, Year, and Generation. [I keep telling myself that I
need to simplify this. It produces too many pieces of paper!]

(3) Library Inventory. The above-mentioned "where did I shelve that
book?" database.

So, that's what I have written. What have you written in MS-Access that
is of real use to you in your genealogical record-keeping or research
ansalysis?

Thanks! Ted
