I also did a lot of my family research before I knew that I had to cite
anything, except microfilm numbers. Now that we have so many censuses
online, I have been going back and looking for page numbers, dwelling and
family numbers, etc. I find the one thing that I makes all the difference is
knowing the Enumeration District numbers, no matter where I am searching.
When I was searching, in my novice years, through the reels and reels of
microfilm, many times I inadvertently wrote down the wrong township and now
I find it is taking me longer to "find" the families again with just county,
dwelling, and family numbers.
So if my citation read: John Doe household, 1880 U.S. census, Any County,
North State, population schedule, Any Township, ED# 101, page 44, dwelling.
95, family 96.
Would it matter which film was used, the NARA microfilm or the FHL
microfilm? Wouldn't the basic information be the same on both?
