I'm posting this at the request of Paula Warren, CGRS, who tried posting it
last week. Neither one of us saw it on the list, so she asked me to try
sending it for her.
Her original message of 28 June 2001 follows:
=============================================
Hello everyone,
First, we're very happy to hear that Kenneth Aitken will be able to come to
his first FGS Conference, and join so many of us who truly enjoy these
annual gatherings. Quad Cities is going to be a memorable conference!
Since Kenneth asked some questions about the hotels in the Quad Cities for
the Federation of Genealogical Societies' conference this September we
thought this was a good opportunity to update our fellow APG members on
this. We thought there might be others who had not recently checked the FGS
Web site, or not yet subscribed to the conference ezine for direct e-mail
updates on FGS/Quad Cities.
The conference ezine has carried several updates on hotels. We are trying to
keep folks current on many topics via this ezine. Never before has a
national conference had a vehicle for keeping registrants and possible
registrants informed so quickly and in such a targeted fashion. The number
of subscribers is wonderful.
The Blackhawk, Clarion, and Radisson hotels filled for the peak conference
nights several months ago as many of you on this list remember hearing
about. They had lots of reservations long before people began sending in
their conference registrations. Actually, all this thrills us. It means lots
of folks are coming to the conference. And it is not at all unusual.
Experienced conference-goers have learned that they are wise to make a hotel
reservation early. Some folks later find they cannot attend and cancel their
reservation. So, some conference hotels start a waiting list and others have
a policy that does not allow them to do this.
Our fourth conference hotel, the Holiday Inn, is just five miles away. It is
near many restaurants, a major shopping mall, and a Kinko's for those who
need to make copies at midnight. The hotel has agreed to shuttle hotel
guests to the RiverCenter as it does for many events there. The more
conference guests the Holiday Inn has, the more shuttles it will run to the
RiverCenter during the conference. For those who will arrive in cars, the
Holiday Inn has a large, free parking lot. The drive from the hotel to the
RiverCenter is quick and easy. Later in the summer, up-to-date downtown
parking information will be on the conference ezine and the FGS Web site.
(Parking, like most other things in the Quad Cities, is relatively
inexpensive for folks accustomed to genealogical conferences in larger
metropolitan areas.)
There are already over 100 folks staying at the Holiday Inn, and we have
heard from many others who are staying at hotels and motels all over the QC
area. Keep in mind that from the River Center in downtown Davenport it is
just a short drive over the bridge to several hotels and motels on the
Illinois side of the Mississippi. As Michael Neill shared with you earlier
this week, the FGS Web site has more complete details on the Holiday Inn and
on other lodging places in the Quad Cities area. Campground information is
also on the FGS Web site. You will find many of the well known hotel chains
in the area as well as some local motels. A few years ago the area hosted
the Women's Bowling Congress which brought 46,000 people to the area -- so I
think they can accommodate all of us genealogists!
At the FGS Web site www.fgs.org to check on accommodations click on the FGS
Conferences button, then on the one for 2001 FGS Conference, and then the
one for Accommodations. or go directly to
www.fgs.org/2001conf/conf-accomodations.htm
After you do that, under the Program Highlights button click on Thursday to
see a list of the fantastic door prizes that have been donated for the FGS
25th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday evening. This evening is
co-sponsored by FGS and Ancestry.com and is a free event for all conference
registrants. Come and have a light bite to eat, a piece of anniversary cake
and some enjoyable conversation, too. Check back every so often to see about
additional door prizes.
At the web site you will also find the instructions for subscribing to the
conference ezine.
It's less than three months until the FGS 2001 conference opens. The Quad
Cities volunteers, Convention & Visitors Bureau, and business have been
working for five years to welcome you there. There are plenty of places to
stay. And, no matter where you do stay, a wonderful conference experience
awaits you. Be sure that you include Tuesday arrival and registration for
the APG Professional Management Conference in your plans. We will see you
there!
