This must have been my week - a week of receiving incomplete and undocumented responses to requests for information, etc., etc. But one email I got takes the cake.

To set the stage, I found someone who appears to have substantial information on one line of my family. Over about three years I have patiently been going back and forth online - she would tantilize me with the little shred of new information and I would be sooo grateful - I would wait an appropriate period of time then I would ask if she could tell me where the information came from. This last episode has me saying unspeakable things!!!

The last tidbit was a birth date for a great uncle - a fact I had not been able to uncover with any confidence that the date I had was in fact when he was born. So I ever so gently prodded my correspondent with the question, did she possibly recall where that date came from - that I had been trying to get positive date of birth for him for sometime and that date was different than what I had.

Then I waited for a response. It finally came: "I think it came from a book by (so and so)." Duhhhhh!

I did not set aside waiting an appropriate time to prod her and fired off an email asking for details, little things like was it a published book? what was the title? where did she find the book? is the author or compiler still living? and on and on. Without a doubt I am expecting too much, wouldn't you say?

There are some days it just doesn't pay to turn on the computer!

Connie
