I give students the option of researching someone who has been/is a mentor
to them. Many have close ties with step-relatives or individuals who have
fulfilled a familial role, even though they are not "blood kin". I refer to
this as a "nurture line" and explain that these people won't be donors if we
need a kidney but they are very important in shaping who we are and who we
become. I think researching a personal mentor has far more meaning than
researching some distant famous figure.
