"-py" means pus, and "-emia" means of the blood.
This septicemia (the current word), or pyemia, would almost certainly have
been a secondary infection that arose from a primary infection somewhere
else, which then leaked into the bloodstream.
After the birth, there could have been an injury in the birth canal that
became infected.
Or placental products could have remained (which is why some women have a D&C
after childbirth), which then became necrotic (dead) and infected, thus
creating a site of abscess(es), which then spilled over into the bloodstream.
Puerperal fever is a related condition: infection of the placental site which
spreads into the uterus, and the bloodstream.
A sad and painful way to leave this life.
