This past week, the Family History Library has, surprisingly, been almost
empty. No genealogical tour groups are in town, and many of the local
non-professionals don't want the hassle of traveling downtown and downtown
parking is virtually nonexistent. Many downtown streets are closed,
resulting in lengthy delays, although traveling downtown via public transit
is almost as easy and fast now as it is at any other time.) Hence, almost
all of the faces I saw yesterday at the library were the faces of other
professional genealogists, or the faces of media, or the faces of the
augmented staff. (Or the faces of the large security contingent in the FHL
lobby, who are now physically inspecting every bag coming and going, along
with requiring everyone to walk through an airport-style magnetometer.) I
left yesterday shortly after six p.m., and by that time, I am sure there
were more staff members and security personnel in the library than there
were patrons. The library is staying open until 11 p.m. for the Olympics,
Monday through Saturday, and I have heard that by 11 p.m. the library has
been like a ghost town. Hence, if you were in town last week, you would
have had the run of the library; I got more work done than I usually can
because I never had to wait for a copier or reader/printer, or wait in line
at a library attendants' window.
I am not going to make any predictions about how crowded or empty the
library will be during the next two weeks. I have been stockpiling work
that I can do at my home office just in case. As I noted in a previous
post, the problem with during genealogical research at the FHL during the
Olympics is not likely to be in the library itself, but rather in the
difficulty of getting downtown, and, for those visiting from elsewhere,
finding a place to stay. One of Salt Lake City's newspapers had this
article in the morning's paper, noting that while a few rooms are still
left, prices are (by Salt Lake City standards) extremely high.
