Thanks to all who responded to my quest for the origin of the monk story. I
posted this to the Librarians-Serving-Genealogists list as well, and was
overwhelmed with all the responses from genealogists and librarians. None,
however, knew the original source of the story. It has apparently been
around for a very long time.

Myra Vanderpool Gormly, CG found it on six different websites!

Donn Devine, of this list, responded to me privately and reminded me that
"we're no longer using 'primary' and
'secondary' to characterize sources--those terms now apply only to the
items of information within sources. Sources are either original or
derivative." Whoever titled the story "The Importance of Primary Source
Materials" will need to pick up a copy of the the ProGen Manual!

Thanks to all-
