Rootsweb's material is still free.
However, Ancestry.com has both free and "for membership only" sites. I have
a full subscription to Ancestry.com and in some cases very satisfied with
what they offer and in some cases (mostly census images) disappointed... but
then when I look at the original film census images, I find myself
disappointed there also <smile>
Like has already been reported, it takes a combination of all... plus a lot
of leg work, to do research. Doing research only online is a big NO NO, as
many things are not and never will be online. (Remember: Online material is
not original material and is subject to errors.)
Also... Ancestry.com and the LDS Church are two different things. The Church
does not own Ancestry.com, but many of the owners of Ancestry.com are LDS
members.
The LDS Church does maintain a free website at www.familysearch.com that is
updated quite often, however, again the holdings of the Family History
Centers are not and may never be online, so there is another place to search
that would convienent for many of you as there are over 5, 000 FHCs just in
the US alone. The cataloge for the Salt Lake City's main library is on the
above site... and anything that is on film or fiche and is not restricted can
be ordered for use at your local FHC. Each FHC also has many basic sets,
such as the AIS (census index) from 1600s to about1850, plus a full
mortaility schedule IN STOCK.... free for your use along with many film and
fiche already ordered by staff or patrons.
But then, nothing takes the place of going to the location and talking with
current residents!
Annette,
who works her fingers and legs to the bone. You would think I would be
losing a lot of weight (wrong!) <grin>
