There was an interesting article in Time magazine (April 15 p. 60) called
"Cousins: A New Theory of Relativity." The article is drawn from a new book
by Martin Ottenheimer (no relation, and anyway, he has Ts where my husband
has Ps) called _Forbidden Relatives: The American Myth of Cousin Marriage,"
and also mentions an article published in the _Journal of Genetic
Counseling_ "last week" that indicates that children of cousin marriage "run
an only slightly higher risk of significant genetic disorders like cystic
fibrosis or congenital heart defects." The basic conclusion of the article
is that there is no reason why first cousins should not marry.
