Subject: [APG] Insurance records name some slave owners / slaves
Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 08:58:08 EDT

Interesting article in today's Los Angeles Times: Yesterday a report from
the California Department of Insurance identified six insurance companies
that issued "slave-era" policies. The agency posted the names of hundreds of
slave owners and the slaves they insured on its Web site. For the L.A. Times
story, go to: <http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-050202slavery.story>;.

The report itself was posted to the Dept. of Insurance website:

The report is limited to a few insurance companies, granted. But perhaps
similar lists will be made public in the future?? The article points out the
potential benefit of this information -- albeit limited in scope -- to those
involved with slave reparations. It does not mention the potential benefit
to family historians!
