Cindy and others,
The U.S. Dept of the Interior, National Park Service
Interagency Resources Division publishes #39, National
Register Bulletin on "Researching a Historic
Property." This includes basic sources and techniques
for collecting data for nominating a historic property
to the National Register.

it also contains a marvelous chart of sources which can
serve as a great review reference for doing any kind of
historical research including genealogy as well as
special resources on architectural records, style
guides, clearinghouses etc.

I assume this is free from Interior. Our local
government historic preservation officer has a large
supply and hands them out freely. And-- if your local
entity also has such a position, you might want to
discuss this with her/him.
