My cousin wrote to Attica (NY) prison and got us the records of my
grandfathers brother who was in Attica in the 1950s. I should say up to
the 1970s even. They were copies of the original inmate file cards
which listed offences, in and out times, and of course his photos. We
found out after he was related through a second marriage and not
directly related. We were happy to find that was the case after reading
his file. All in the family were told he got caught up in some bank
robbery as an unaware get away driver.
I have beautiful poems on his original letters to my grandfather he
wrote while in prison. All the letters have a poem on one side and
family letter on the other side. My parents were divorced. I found my
cousin by posting on rootsweb. Turns out her side was told the same
story and she had letters too. After we get the records we find the
whole story was made up because of family embarassment. The guy was a
repeat child molester! Amazing such beautiful poems could come from a
person like that.
