Subject: [APG] Massachusetts Public Records Closing Diligence
Date: Mon, 22 Jul 2002 23:07:00 -0700 (PDT)

Hello,
The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) has received SOME
unofficial reports that H5158 will NOT be recommended from the House
Rules Committee for a third reading
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/comm/h33.htm

However, the MGC is also receiving reports that the Registry of Vital
Records, Registrar Stanley E. Nyberg, Ph.D. is still maintaining an
ERRONEOUS POSITION that H5158 is supported by the MGC - causing
confusion with some representatives, and attempting to proceed with
this bill passage before July 31st.

The MGC is unalterably opposed to the Public Records closing in H5158
and continues to support the MA Senate bill S2302
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/bills/st02302.htm The MA Secretatry of
State, NEHGS and the MA Newspaper Publisher's Association are also
opposed to H5158.

Repeated attempts to obscure the valid objections to H5158 need to be
removed. Massachusetts Representatives should be asked if they have
conducted a line by line comparison of H5158 versus S2303 - as the MGC
has done - and investigated all rhetorical smoke screens.

MA residents who have already contacted their local rep are requested
to send a brief note to
<> and summarize their representative's reponse
and understanding of the H5158 bill. Folks outside of MA who have heard
from either MA reps or MA residents may also send a summary of their
responses to help the MGC clarify any further sources of
miscommunication.

Public hearings will not be held in this session, so it is imperative
that the MGC get a summarized replay of the phone, email and letter
communications with MA Representatives.

Thank you for your interest in this matter,
Sharon Sergeant
MGC Program Director
