Richard,
By way of comparison: on page 60 (1870 census. Ohio, Shelby County, Sidney) the same enumerator, Geo. Murray, records a Thomas on line 30, and an Edmond on line 38. Page 60 is a clearer image. My old eyes say your guy is "Edmond."

Many thanks to all those who so kindly took time to look at this census
record for me. It appears that the following is the information given in the
census record:
Pence, William 38 mw Jour. Carpenter $1000, $100, OH
, Susanna 25 fw keeping house OH
, Edward/Edmond 11 mw attending school OH
, Thomas 02 mw at home OH
As you will note, the main contention seems to be whether the older child,
apparently from an earlier marriage by William, is Edward or Edmond.
I have the following additional information to support the above reading:
The Shelby County Death Records, published by the SCGS:
William Pence died 8 June 1890 Sidney, Ohio; born Champaign Conty, white;
suicide; resided Sidney; male; married 55 years 5 monhs 24 days; House
Mover.
A book of Shelby County Cemetery Records says William Pence was born 12
January 1832 Sidney, Ohio; died 8 June 1890 Sidney, Ohio; 58 years; buried
Lot 78-3 in Graceland Cemetery, Shelby County.
William Penc married Susannah Humble 29 Dec. 1867 in Shelby County, Ohio.
Mrs. Susannah Pence married S. A. Johnston on 24 December 1893 in Shelby
County. The cemetery book shows that
Susannah Johnston, born 1 Jan 1844 in Shelby County; died 3 Oct 1919 at
Sidney, Ohio, 75 years; buried Lot 78-3 in Graceland Cemetery (the same lot
in which William Pence was buried 29 years earlier).
Now comes the clinker.
In far-off Coos County, Oregon, a Frank Pence died 13 Oct 1944, 74 years
after the above 1870 census was taken. Prior to his death, Frank has
provided the folloiwng information to the County Welfare Department, which
was the informant on his death certfificate.
Frank Pence, "single," was born 6 Jun 1868 in "Sydney County, Ohio."
His father was William Pence, born "Schamayne" (Champaign) County, Ohio, and
his mother was Susan Humble, born in "Sydney County, Ohio."
Perhaps now you will see why I was hoping that at least one person would
agree with my initial (optimistic) reading of the census record that the
youngest lad was "Francis" and not "Thomas."
An added problem is that I have been unable to locate any of the above folks
in the 1880 or subsequent census records - and this includes scanning an
every-name list of those in Shelby County in 1880 and the LDS 1880 disk set.
Oh, well, perhaps he was like my own Uncle Frank - whose actual name was
Thomas Franklin Pence! <g>
There is another "clinker" in this story - having to do with the age of
William - but that's another story.
And for those with the curiousity for such details, it seems that on 8 Jun
1890, William Pence, "an industrious and teperate man," enjoyed a hearty
Sunday dinner at his home in Sydney, topped by four or five cups of coffee.
He then rose to make a trip to the outhouse and on his way passed through
the sitting room, where he picked up a rusty pocket knife from the mantle.
Upon reaching the outhouse, he slit his throat "from ear to ear."
Look at the bright side: He could have done it in the sitting room.
Again, many thanks to all those who helped out. The many Saturday messages
lead me to believe that you are an unusual group in yet another way: You
have an internet connection at home. (A great many of the messages I get
come during the week - presumably from folks who are at "work" and using
their office machines! <g>)
Regards,
Richard Pence
