Subject: [APG] Computerizing Client Data

Natalie;
While I agree with you that no sane client
would want to pay someone to take the time to
learn the ins and outs of new software, there is
one problem with your approach.
I do not recall the specific versions and
combinations now, but I have several programs
installed on my computer, and use each of them in
certain circumstances. I decided to test GEDCOM
import and export results between these programs,
to learn what to expect if I decided to convert a
file from one format to another.
In one case general notes files would not
transfer correctly. I suggest creating a short
'test' genealogy file in your program, exporting
that to GEDCOM, then supplying a copy to any
client who wants your services in this regard.
That way, they can discover any poential problems
before you have done the work, and you will avoid
the risk of either leaving the client frustrated
or redoing the work to correct the bug. If there
are problems, then you can decide if it is worth
working them out, or better to refer the client
to someone else.
And, Jane, if someone asks me to trace a
famous person forward to their own family, I am
not sure that I would even want them for a
client, unless they proved capable of
understanding why that is a bad idea.
Ray
