Annette,
To transfer data files from one computer to another, the simplest solution
is to network the two if you have network cards in both systems. These now
cost less the $10 each. If you are connecting only 2 computers you can use
a Cat 5 cross-over cable and will not need a hub or switch. Office supply
stores, such as Office Depot, as well as computer stores sell the cables
and hub, if you need one.
However, if you are having to open the case to install a network card, you
can also just install your old hard drive into your new computer as a
"slave" drive. Your old D drive already is a slave. The C drive will have a
diagram to show how to change the jumper on your C drive to make it a
slave. You probably will not have the capability to install both old drives
at the same time but can do one and then switch out to the other, or it
sounds like you could copy all the files you need onto your old D drive and
not worry about jumper settings. You could even leave it in your new
computer permanently.
You might feel more comfortable having a computer shop install the
secondary hard drive, however this would still be much less expensive than
an elaborate data transfer system.
Anyone with more than one computer in the same house should consider
networking them for file and printer sharing. Our color printer is attached
to hubby's computer and the laser to mine, so either computer can print
directly to either printer. I also use my hubby's hard drive to save some
of my data files. The laptop also plugs into this network when it is home
and files are easily transferred or even opened from my desk top system
even though they reside on the laptop.
Note: Microsoft states that *XP Home* (there are 2 versions of XP Windows)
will not support file and printer sharing on a network. From experience I
can only tell you that XP Home will not network with an NT4.0 system.
