Ancestry.com has added several states to its every-name index of the 1930
U.S. census, including my home state of South Dakota. So, I thought I would
check out my Dad's family. He was a lad of 20 at the time, not yet married
and living with his parents on the farm in Frederick Twp, Brown County.
I just spent the better part of an hour trying to find him and his parents
in the index. First under PENCE. Then under the soundex equivalent, then by
county, township and given name only.
Almost missed it. There was my Dad: Robert M. PEVER, age 20, Frederick Twp,
Brown County, SD. The image showed him living with his parents and his
sister Grace.
That, I think, is No. 49 in the list of different renditions under which I
have found PENCE records. This one, without doubt, is the most far afield!
It takes a real guesser to get PEVER from PENCE!
I still haven't found my two uncles, both of whom had families of their own
in 1930 and were living nearby.
Sigh.
Wishing you much better luck,
