Hi John

We in Florida have a little better state government constitution than most in this matter for our records, for the most part, are public and accessible. This was done in our constitution many, many years ago. Also we have an organization known as the First Amendment Foundation located in Tallahassee, FL. The executive directory of that organization is extremely pro-active toward keeping ALL records open and public. We cannot access birth records or adoption records freely in FL but we have access to death records from 1877 to present. The only restrictions would be that only immediate family can view cause of death until the person has been deceased more than 50 yrs.

At this time our Governor Bush is trying to set the wheels into motion to cut off the financial budget for our State Archives and Library and close the doors. He has proposed to move them into another facility but unfortunately there is no other facility that can take them because of the same stringent budget cuts.

I am the president of our local genealogical society and a member of several boards in our county and I am pressing very hard to encourage them to write and/or call their legislative representative to voice their objection to the cutoff of funding for the library.

I wrote many letters to both CA and MA when they were running bills in and out of their Assembly to limit access to vital records. Not sure if the letters helped but I tried.

A legislator in any state or a member of Congress will sit up and take notice when lots and lots of mail begins to pour into their office concerning the same subject. Those are votes and more votes.
