Dear Ray, et al.,
In the course of my day job I manage some software and
IT databases that have grown slowly but now encompass
literally man-centuries of work. We suddenly realized
that we had not done a thorough job on disaster
planning.
Turns out that in business this is officially called
"contingency planning." This phrase will turn up all
sorts of tools and frameworks.
I would like to point out 2 useful websites with very
thorough and free information (not trying to sell some
slick service or software) that, while very IT
business related, still have useful trigger questions
and frameworks to build one's genealogy data plan
around. They have a strong IT focus although they
cover other topics as well.
They are:
1.
http://www.contingencyplanning.com/tools/bcphandbook/disruption.asp
(the main site http://www.contingencyplanning.com/ is
a goldmine, but the first link is to the tools)
2.
http://www.contingency-planning-disaster-recovery-guide.co.uk/
(a UK site but geared for small businesses)

I recently heard on NPR of a famous White House
photographer who photographed literally hundreds of
personal, candid shots of the Kennedy family (e.g.
Caroline playing with her father, etc). He had
carefully stored the negatives in the bank vault of
one of the world's biggest banks. Unfortunately, that
vault was in the World Trade Center. All that is left
is whatever prints were made. So even the best laid
plans...
