I have found information about suicides in newspaper articles in the
days follwing the death. The Sacramento Bee certainly printed the vivid
details of my great aunt's suicide on the front page of the paper,
including who she called just prior to killing herself, and who called
the police. The responding officers, etc.
In the case of one suicide, the event made the local newspaper, but
there is no death certificate on file with Alameda County, even though
the deceased lived and died in Oakland.
And, the coroners office normally investigates a suicide to rule out
foul play. The coroners file may include photos, autospy, statements
from friends and family, etc.
Someone I grew up with committed suicide Easter Sunday, and watching her
family deal with her death, her choice of death, and the broken family
relationship issues is tough. I can understand why surviving families
do not want to talk about the event.
In the case of my great aunt, I was in my late 30's before I learned how
she died from my mother. My grandmother never spoke of her (a favorite
sister) or her manner of death.
