<I'm always ecstatic when I find the "Grand Lists" in amongst the early town
books. In the absence of vital records at the local level these lists plus
school district "scholar" lists, . . .>
I defnitely agree that tax rolls, etc., are grand. They're fantastic,
they're fabulous, and just about every other superlative we might add!
But one point needs clarifying with regard to Heather's original
question--and it goes back to what Kathy Sullivan meant when she initially
wrote that the viability of using tax records for a BCG application depends
upon *how* one uses them.
I suspect that Heather's mentor, who was concerned about whether she should
use them in her certification portfolio, was also thinking of tax records in
the traditional concept of a *list* to use as a census substitute, etc. But
I know Heather has been exposed to classes that teach how to use tax records
as far more than just a "list" that says somebody was there at particular
time.
Bottom line: If applicants use a tax rolls as only a "list," it could indeed
weaken the application. If they demonstrate their ability to use tax rolls
as a *record* that is filled with all sorts of bits and pieces of valuable
data--all of which can be correlated, linked, and maximized in all sorts of
ways to prove bigger issues--then they will definitely strengthen their
applications.
