Pat,

When I cite digital images from online publications, I create them in this
way:

----------------------

Probate file for Margaret Smith, filed 19xx, #24856, "St. Louis
Probate Court Digitization Project: 1802 - 1900" (Online: Missouri State
Archives, 2004) [Digital image of microfilmed original records in the
Missouri State Archives], <http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/stlprobate/>;,
accessed xx August 2004.

----------------------

The probate file represents a digital image (a derivative) taken from a
digital publication. So, I've always felt that these digital images need to
be cited differently than we would an original (non-derivative) record. I'm
sure there are other opinions.

This footnote includes:
- the name of decedent,
- year probate was originally filed,
- the certificate number,
- the name of the database from which it was taken,
- the name of the group that published the database,
- an editorial comment that the source you examined was a digital image,
- the URL of the database,
- and the date that the database was accessed.

Perhaps we could better find the record again, and/or understand the nature
of what you examined with this citation.

PS. I love these St. Louis databases - they're great and have helped with
several projects I've completed. Yeah, Missouri!

The Missouri Archives put an online index with scanned images on their
website. For my main source, I have it listed as the following:

Missouri. Missouri State Archives. St. Louis Probate 1800 to 1900 Index
electronic database with scanned images on line at
<http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/>;. Missouri State Archives, Jefferson
City, MO.

For the footnote, I use:
Margaret Smith, scanned probate file 24856, Missouri State Archives, Office
of Probate Court, St. Louis City, Missouri.

Some suggestions please.
