When I applied for SS, I mailed in my birth certificate and it was returned.
Of course I had other copies, having been wise enough to order several copies
back when copies were cheap.
When my mother applied for SS a number of years ago, she had a great deal of
trouble proving her age, as she was born before the age of birth certificates.
She gathered up a number of documents to submit, school record, census, a
letter from two elderly cousins who vowed they remembered when she was born.
Now I have no idea what she did to get a Social Security number to start with or
even when she got it.
