Michelle,
I recommend having both Ancestry and Heritage Quest. I spent several hours yesterday going back and forth between Ancestry and Heritage Quest while conducting census research. For example, I was looking for a man named Barclay J. Smith. I located his name in the Ancestry index for 1920, but could not locate his name on Heritage Quest. I found Barclay's 1920 census entry quickly at Ancestry, but the image was nearly unreadable. I entered the roll and page number at Heritage Quest and I got a fairly clear image.
