Now that the holidays are over, I finally had time to sit down and assess
the advice received from this list regarding projectors. Here's what I
learned from y'all:
* Don't be afraid to choose refurbished if from a reputable dealer and
with full warranty
* Brands recommended were InFocus, Dell, Toshiba, BenQ, NEC
* Go to http://www.projectorcentral.com/ for reviews and comparisons of
various models
* 1100 lumens is quite adequate for most presentations
* Consider resolution: XGA (1024X768) vs SVGA (800X600)
* Consider fan noise ratings
* It's a good idea to have second bulb storage, a carrying case, and a
25' extension cord

After considering all the suggestions and reading the comparisons at
ProjectorCentral.com, I thought about which features were priorities for
me. I choose to buy a InFocus LP70, new. The lowest cost from a dealer I
had faith in was $1600 from TigerDirect through Amazon (my usual source for
just about anything). Shipping & handling was $11.49. This projector has
the following features that influenced my decision:
* Good user reviews
* 1400 lumens
* 2.4 pounds!
* Low fan noise rating
* Bulb rated for 4000 hours (new bulb cost, $350-400)
* XGA resolution
* Comes with the remote control
The buying info doesn't indicate that the projector comes with a carrying
case, so I'll have to wait to see if it comes with one. If not, I'll be
shopping for that; I saw some for sale on Froogle. I loved the idea about
having second bulb storage within the projector but I didn't find any
information on which models might have that.

Other listers brought up the profitability issue. I pretty much agree with
Elizabeth--lecturing is rarely profitable at all if you factor in the hours
of prep work. I cannot justify spending this much money on a projector if I
consider the profit ratio. However, I consider it important to present the
very best lectures with the best technology I can muster, despite the cost
(as long as I'm able to do that). Only the experiences in the coming years
will tell me if it was worth it.

The feedback from everybody on the APG list was invaluable to me. I was
totally at sea, but after reading everyone's suggestions, I went out and
made an informed decision. Thanks, Carolyn
