Welcome, Joe! So glad you found us. I hope you enjoy this list as many of us
do.

I did want to mention on the business discussion thread that websites are an
important tool for getting the word "out there." Of course APG members are
listed in the on-line directory which is referenced in articles such as the
most recent one appearing in the AARP magazine. So in browsing the
organizations website, you are indirectly advertised to people who need your
services.

I feel it is also important to have a personal website -- personal meaning
for your own business. I know many of my clients have told me that they have
found me through my website. (Now if I can just keep it updated. <g>)

The other website that helps me greatly is the Board For Certification of
Genealogists website and directory. I know that my latest client hired me
because I am certified. It has turned into a huge project and I may just
have to name my new car after him. <g>

Advertising is the key in growing any business, be it overt, subtle,
word-of-mouth endorsement, or indirect (such as the AARP article). When I
began my business over 15 years ago there was no active Internet but we did
have Everton's Genealogical Helper. And that was a good start. But now with
web hosting so cheap and good design packages out there (I use Fusion 8),
do-it-yourself websites are getting easier to create.

Participation on various email lists in your areas of interest also will get
your name "out there" as you become a helpful resource to people. This goes
for current members of the list and those who read the archives down the
road. People like to deal with knowledgeable helpful people. Let your light
shine!
