I will cast my vote with Chuck. It appears that this enumerator was in
the habit of using the "fs" style of indicating double s, as in
"Tennessee" on lines 22, 30 and 39 of the same page. Closer examination
seems to indicate that this enumerators lowercase "a" and "o" are often
indistinguishable from each other - see "Elizabeth" line 21, "Robert"
line 22, and "Martin" line 23. I believe we are looking at Bassham
which is a surname found frequently in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and
other "Southern" states.
