<Thank you so much for posting this to APG. I don't have much time to work on my own family research, but decided to give this a try. I had so much fun going through the 1901 census and spent the better part of yesterday adding to and organizing various ancestors in Ontario. Thanks so much for sharing!!>
Ann, Thank you. I am glad you found the 1901 Canada census index helpful. Considering that functionality is the sites prime purpose at this time, aesthetically well designed it is not - the site is loud and primarily in rather huge and stark black letters whereby most people would turn away and shop elsewhere. But there is no where to go for an across Canada index.
One can tweak a search through a merge of Surnames to be selected, compensating somewhat for errors in interpretations at this time, but in addition to having the results initially presented alphabetically by First names (called Givens on this site!), the same search results can then be sorted geographically, which is of great assistance for a first look across Canada.
When the system is very busy or almost overwhelmed, rather than c-r-a-s-h before your very eyes (not particularly user friendly <g>), or display an annoying 40x Error message, the system displays a message similar to, The records selected are too many to handle at this moment. Please try at a later time. This happened to me on a stormy Saturday when I had tried Smith and received 43,xxx hits across Canada!
Perhaps also helpful is an overall map of the now Canada as it existed in 1895, found at:

This is more pleasing to the eye. Enjoy!
