Subject: Meaning of L.S. written after signature in Deeds Book

Could anyone tell me what "L.S." means when it is written in either
parenthesis or surrounded by a handwritten seal following a signature in a
Deeds Book? My guess is legal signature but I'm not sure and I could not
find it in any reference book.
