Dear Friends and Colleagues,

After nearly 20 years of going to three major genealogy conferences every
year (NGS, FGS, and Jewish international) I've learned it is possible to
stay home once in a while and survive. It isn't fun, but you can survive. A
couple of times in the last three years I have had to skip one or two of the
annual events due to illness or finances. For me the biggest loss was the
networking with colleagues. I'm hoping that those who did go to Nashville
this year will keep us informed after the fact about all the "gossip" and
any news about new books, software programs, great lectures, interesting
tidbits from the APG Roundtable, and tips from the skill building lectures.
What is the status of lectures on tapes? Will we be able to purchase after
the conference or did we have to send someone with a list and a check?
Inquiring minds want to know what is happening in Nashville. (I heard that
it is raining there today.)

When our colleagues return home we should ask them all to write up at least
a paragraph about their experience so we can live vicariously. And it will
help the rest of us in our quest to save those nickels and dimes (and
drachmas) to attend the FGS conference in Salt Lake City in just a few
months. And, most important, sign up early for registration to the annual
APG Professional Management Conference which will be held in SLC on
Wednesday, September 7th, with a special Roundtable the night before on
Tuesday, September 6th at 7:00 pm. Go to the APG website for full details on
the PMC.

You see....it was okay to miss one conference this year if you absolutely
had to...but you can't afford to miss the one in early September in Salt
Lake City because too many important professional activities will be taking
place and you do not want to miss them. Trust me on this one. And if you've
never been to SLC to do research in the "Candy Store of Genealogy" this is
the time to do it.

Back home in New York City (and at office in northern New Jersey) working at
my computer and producing billable hours each and every day :-) to help pay
for conferences in the future.

See you all at a major genealogical conference in the future...Las Vegas
(IAJGS, July 10-15, 2005), Salt Lake City (FGS, Sept. 7-10, 2005), Chicago
(NGS, June 7-10, 2006), New York City (IAJGS, August 13-18, 2006), Boston
(FGS, August 30-Sept 2, 2006), Richmond (NGS, May 2007), Salt Lake City
(IAJGS, July 2007), Ft. Wayne? (FGS, 2007), plus all the regional
conferences.* See...there are so many learning opportunities we have no
reason not to attend a major conference every year.

IAJGS = International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (the
conference in 2005 is the 25th annual)
* dates from my personal calendar and there could be errors or changes in
the future
Note: Suggestion for August 2006.... Attend the IAJGS conference in New York
City with international speakers and then go on to Boston 12 days later
where the conference will include the APG's Professional Management
Conference...in between take a vacation/research trip through upstate New
York and New England!
