Elissa asked - Why send the letter and a complaint to
the prison?

A friend who worked at a corrections institute says
that, at least at their facility, mail is not read and
censored. For a brutal crime of raping and murdering a
young woman, part of the sentence may have included
stipulations of no attempts to contact other young
women, etc. If this person is violating such a
stipulation, then it should be recorded by the
facility. One possible reason is to effect future
considerations for parole, etc.

The original letter to the list and my reply were in
regard to this particular case and inmate. The other
issues raised are more complex.

I am all for reforming our public schools and justice
system for the prevention of the root causes of much of
the overcrowding of our prisons. And I agree that
programs in the prisons to teach social skills and
build self-esteem should be mandatory.

On the other hand, some prisons offer greater
educational and medical resources than the "free"
population receive. My Vietnam Veteran husband cannot
receive any re-training after being laid-off from a
30-year career. At the same time inmates in Texas who
have no hope of ever getting out of prison can get free
college educations. Complex, indeed.

I stand by the reply to the original letter to the
list. A man who violently raped and murdered a young
woman "wants help" in proving a "relationship" with
another young woman who is a celebrity? Any other type
of request and, total agreement, proceed with caution.
I was just in social services for too long to believe
this one is not another form of manipulation in this
criminal's repertoire. :-)
