There are two Marriott hotels in downtown Salt Lake City (and a third near
the University of Utah). The Olive Garden that Connie was referring to is
accross the street from the Marriott that is located at the Salt Palace. There
is also a Romano's Macaroni Grill nearby, along with a variety of other
restaurants. So yes, even if the food court at the Crossroads Mall is completely
shut down by September, you won't starve.
In the same area as these restaurants you will also find the Blue Iguana
(Mexican... but the Red Iguana that is run by the same family and a short taxi
ride away is even better!); a Benihana (Japanese); P.F. Chang's (Chinese). Down
in the Gateway Mall (a free ride on the light rail) is a wonderful Thai
restaurant. If you stay until Sunday, the Little America does a fantastic
breakfast buffet... expensive, but incredible. There's a good Brew-house type
restaurant right around the corner from Macaroni Grill. I can't remember the name
of it!
As another who has participated in planning conferences, I urge you to stay
at the conference hotels if at all possible. Part of that advice is the
conference planner in me knowing that conferences must fill their room blocks or
they get charged extra fees. But most of that advice comes from knowing that if
I hadn't stayed in the conference hotel at my first national conference, I
would never have met at least one dear and precious lifelong friend, possibly
more. I also know that the older I get, the more I tire at these conferences.
Having a room very close by is invaluable for taking a one-hour break from
the action. Sitting in the lobby talking to friends until bedtime is much
easier if I don't have to travel to another hotel. I've tried the
"stay-at-the-cheap-hotel" route and the conference hotels, and I definitely prefer the
latter.
Stay four to a room if you have to... a bit of hassle working in four
showers is still easier than transportation headaches in a strange city. Bring your
own cereal for breakfast if you have to. I know people who bring bread and
peanut butter and jelly! Or who pay for a taxi to a grocery store to reduce
their food costs. I know people who bring collapsible coolers in their luggage
and make sandwiches, etc. But try to stay in the conference hotel, or at
least in the alternatives listed in the conference brochure. It's a better
experience in the end.
