Dee Dee,
The fort was not built until the War of 1812. Abattery was built on roocks off
the southern tip of Manhattan 1808-1811 and the fort was built on the landfill
and called Castle Clinton. It was deeded to New York City in 1923 and it became
an open-air restaurant and entertainment center and was renamed Castle Garden. A
roof was added in the 1840's and it became an opera house and theater. (Jenny
Lind performed there.)In 1854 the city leased the property to New York State;
the state opened the immigrant reception center in August 1855.
For information about prisoners/bonded passengers, you should consult the works
of Peter Wilson Colham, including the multi-volume work on "Bonded Passengers
to America". I believe the British session court records are available on
microfilm through the LDS.
