I think we all realize that archives, historical structures, etc.,
are created by the living and not the deceased. And I have no doubt
that local, state, and federal authorities will direct their
resources to support that first of three inalienable rights we all
share: life. Note that third on that list is the pursuit of
happiness, which we sometimes share here on the list in our avocation
as professional genealogists. But obviously not this week. However, I
believe the loss of archives, historical structures, etc.-those
things that define and document our past and make us what we are
today-is a legitimate concern. Having been through a few category 3
hurricanes in my own lifetime here on the east coast of Virginia, I
did not take offense and did not think any intentional callousness
was meant.
