Subject: U.S. Surnames, Frequency Study

Does anyone know of a published study of the most common surnames from the
19th and early 20th Century in the United States? I am looking for something
that might provide me with a "Top 100" (or more) list, along with the
associated statistical data for each name. I do not necessarily need
breakdowns by state, but that would be interesting.
Thanks,
Paul K. Graham
p.s. - Has anyone else noticed that Ancestry.com no longer returns the total
results number for queries made on the site?
