I'm not asking IF a donation can be done. I KNOW it can because I know the
genealogist who donated some of her
work to her local society. I also know that a copyright can be
"transferred" (i.e., sold).

I found out about transferring copyrights several years ago. I checked into
that because one of my favorite
science fiction authors died several years ago and all her work has been
out of print since her death. So, I
checked out the copyright status and found that someone owns the copyrights
to her work. (It's an
individual not a company.) They're just sitting on those copyrights! (I
haven't checked back as I've been broke
since 2001.) It sounds like those people who think they're going to get a
million dollars when they
sell their genealogy book and won't let anyone else even see their notes or
papers in the meantime.
