In researching the Massachusetts Bay Company of New England a sentence
struck me;
"Robert was a New London selectman in 1651 and a representative for the
town in the General Court meeting in Hartford in 1651."
What is the meaning of the selectman? -- was this a noble person? --
an elected person? any ideas would fill in the true meaning. of the
word.
thank you in advance.
