Anyway, this would NOT be the way to build membership which is the goal of
registrars and others in a DAR chapter in assisting a potential applicant to
get their lineage papers in order.
It is far more important to help potential members, who might have little or
no experience in research, than to assist current members who should be doing
most of the work themselves.
What hasn't been mentioned thus far in this discussion (at least that I have
read) is just how MUCH help and how much TIME we are expected to offer
freely to help someone. What I've always done for prospective members and current
members alike is do simple online lookups and check books and resources I
have at home or which are easily accessible for me--and also to instruct the
applicant or member where they can look for other records they might need,
review papers, and provided addresses where vital records might be
obtained--check the Red Book for the availability of records in a given location at a given
time...that sort of help can be easily and quickly provided for free.
However, if ANYONE expects me to do all the work for them and/or spend a great
deal of time--then they would have to pay like anyone else would.
