Subject: Southern records-Mixed race -was Census-Mixed race
Date: Mon, 1 May 2006 21:46:25 -0500
Sorry, the message does not say census records. This message is from the
Berry Family Forum on Genforum # 7601.
Portion of the message is "am beginning to believe it is all due to a Mr.
Plecker (or some name similar to that). This man was a government official
who sent notices to the record keepers in Southern Counties to destroy all
records having to do with people of mixed race. This mixed race group are
now referred to as Melungeons. Cannot prove the Melungeon theory either,
although there has been rumors that one of the early Berry men did indeed
marry an Indian or a black woman."
Is there any truth to this allegation?
Kindest regards,
Beth G.
