It means that Peter HALL was the previous overseer. Often they were
appointed for about one year. If you found that "John SMITH" was appointed
in the room of "Peter HALL" at [month] court term, [year], look at the court
records for the same court term one year previously, and you will probably
find Peter HALL appointed in the room of ------.
Sometimes they will list the hands to work on the road, other times they
will just say "with the previous" ones. You may have to go back several
years to find the names of those previous ones that were to work on the road
under SMITH or HALL.
