I think "in the room of" meant "instead of." I dimly remember hearing my
elders in the Ozark hills use that term.

Can someone please explain to me what is meant in NC and TN records(and
perhaps other states as well) having to do with road maintenance - "John
Smith, road overseer in the room of Peter Hall". I don't understand the "in
the room of" phrase. I couldn't find it in my Blacks Law Dictionary.
