The fees for doing a search have been exorbitant for a very long time in NY.
Several years ago I contacted a clerk in the Surrogates Court in Dutchess
County and asked about searching for a will dated in the 1930s and was told
that the fee for searching was $60 and the copies would be charged on a per
page.
Our county here in Florida has a $1 search fee for documents plus $1 per
page for plain photocopies.
