Rebecca,

You can see the information about exactly what is contained in a
database by reading the description of the database located from the
individual database search page. Each database on Ancestry has a
description and source information that indicates the completion or
status of the database.

For example, the Hamburg Passenger Lists on Ancestry are not a complete
set. The description of the database tells you caveats of that
collection (ie what years are indexed so far vs. what years are not,
what years are missing, etc.) You can see this example here:

As for the Mexican Border crossings...

This is the entire description of the database for Mexican Border
Crossings (see below):

the records, copied from National Archives and Records Administration
(NARA) microfilm (see Source Information for microfilm series

A variety of Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) forms were
used to record information about individuals entering the United States.
Types of forms used included: List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for
the U.S. Immigration Officer at Port of Arrival; Record of Aliens
Arriving; Alien Laborer's Identification Card; Land Border Departure
Record; and Record of Registry. Due to the variety of forms, the amount
of information available for an individual in this database will vary
according to the form used and the questions asked on it. The type of
information that is generally contained in this database though,
includes:

Name

Age

Birth date

Birthplace

Gender

Ethnicity/nationality

Names of individuals accompanied by

Port of arrival

Arrival date

Additional information about an individual may be recorded on the
original document and may be obtained by viewing the corresponding
image. Some records even include a photograph of the individual or their
family.

The majority of the records are arranged alphabetically by surname. Some
of them are arranged by Soundex code. The records can include both
permanent and temporary as well as statistical and nonstatistical
arrivals.

Subject: Re: [APG] Mexican Border Crossing on Ancestry

I wonder if the Mexican Border Crossings is complete, ie. are all the
sources listed as sources available today? While I can pull up *some*
entries for my grandmother's siblings, my grandmother is not listed -
anyway I can't find her yet and she should be there multiple times.
There should also be more entries for her siblings. It is great to see
the few entries available for my family!

Ancestry.com often doesn't indicate the lack of completeness of a
database when it is first posted. I suspect it will be some time before
all the sources cited are actually online. I should stop being
surprised by the announcements that a database is "now complete" long
after it was first announced as being available. I guess I will have
to keep checking back.

up some familiar names which I was sure were in Mexico before moving to
the United States. This is an exciting part of Ancestry.
