Since I more or less am one of the people that Elizabeth describes, I have
to concur with her explanation. I am a board member for the Tallahassee
Genealogical Society - my local society - and I edit the Society's
quarterly. I also participate as an active member of the Florida State
Genealogical Society.

On the other hand, I have been a member of the NEHGS for several years,
despite the fact that I live in Florida. In that time, unlike my active
participation in my "home" societies, I have only visited the Society's home
twice, and I have never attended a Society meeting. Consequently I have
never participated in any kind of Society election.

But as a person with numerous early New England ancestors, I have made
valuable use of NEHGS' considerable printed resources and I have used their
online databases extensively. I also subscribe to their email newsletter to
keep up with points of interest and of additional resources that have been
published or have come online.

The simple truth is that, As Elizabeth suggests, I tend to think of NEHGS as
a research resource rather than as an organization in which to actively
participate. Maybe it is just the distances involved in our relative
geography, but that feels okay to me.
