I've been told by someone who knows that NEHGS never hired a private
detective to investigate the opponent of the reorganization plan. (I
never heard that before!) They already knew enough about him. Perhaps
they never thought it was a serious enough accusation to reply to, or
more likely, just felt replying would be fanning the flames.

Also, I do not understand this business about money and power. My
experience, which is extensive, with the NEHGS leadership, is that they
care deeply about the organization and making resources available. This
is a scary time for genealogical libraries. Witness the serious
difficulties of the NYG&B.

Of course NEHGS needs money to provide services, especially for the
website, parts of which (the 1841-1910 Mass. VRs for example) are
available to all. (Bet most of you didn't know that. <g> )

The annual cost per member of NEHGS in fiscal year 2005 was roughly
$280. Dues are $75. Fortunately the society has many generous patrons
and financial support has been growing each year.

And power as a motivation -- possibly an individual here or there, but
on the whole -- shall I be blunt? That's absurd!

Both NEHGS and the NYG&B have marvelous resources. We need them! Let's
support them!
