I am afraid that all of these generalized statements are a waste of time.
How Indians or people of Indian descent were perceived or treated almost
certainly varied from one location to another. I would certainly expect a
different reaction in Oklahoma - home of numerous reservations and formerly
known as The Indian Territory - than one might find in...say parts of
Southwest Texas, or maybe South Central Georgia.
I don't believe that you are going to find a "one size fits all" answer to
the question. Clearly, one can find examples of people facing both
acceptance while others ran into rejection.
And, for what its worth, I have TWO family lines (Campbell and Spencer)
where three brothers actually did come to America. Even the hoariest of the
myths can occasionally be true.
