Although Sharon's approach is not my own, I thought it was well thought-out and would work for a genealogy degree. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work. She shouldn't give up. HGC realized that it needed to break off and be an independent college in order to really have control and get things started. She might want to detach herself from a traditional college in order to publicize the degree and get more people involved as well as students.

Actually, the college program Sharon Sergeant described ran at Lesley
University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A reader of this list, who probably
does not wish to be identified, was listed as the first "trial" class
professor. It is my understanding that it failed due to under-subscription.

Well, I AM a "genealogical researcher . . . who had many clients over the
years and once made her living from genealogy through client research,
teaching, lecturing, writing, editing, and publishing--starting in the late
1970s. My students WILL have hands-on experience.

I also thought Sharon Sergeant had an excellently thought-out program and I
was totally on board, but, ultimately, it never came to fruition for
whatever reason. At some point, the genealogical community needs to help
bring one of these opportunities to life and give it a shot. That's what I,
through Akamai, am trying to do.

Regards, Carolyn
